General Discussion / Re: Employability Skils in the workplace
« on: June 26, 2017, 11:56:56 pm »
1.   The employability skills I was developing was Customer Service, Team Work, Communication, Problem Solving, Planning & Organising, Self-Management, Learning, Technology, Data Collection and sorting.
2.   Customer service- talking to customers and helping find what they need. Communication- communicating with other staff members and customers. Self-management- being able to work on your own without anyone helping you.
3.   Yes, I think that some of the skills can be taught in the work place and can be learned by yourself and with other staff members. It can also be taught and learnt outside of work and at home/with friend and use your skills.

Hey Tara. Sounds like you used a lot of employability skills while you were on work placement! Good work. I think you're right about the employability skills necessary for retail - and in fact David the manager I spoke to said the same thing. I think you have an advantage knowing what the employability skills are and that employers are looking for specific ones depending on the industry.

1.   Using the SBL gun- scanning items and printing the price tag out and putting it back with the item. Using the markdown gun- a little red sticker to put on the clothing. Unpacking the delivery – toys, clothing, shoes, towels, beauty and putting them on the trolley’s. stacking the shelves – putting items from the storage room and put them on the trolley and take them and stack them on the shelves. Electronics -  putting magnets on all the electronical appliances on display so people do not steal them.
2.   The most interesting thing I learnt on work placement is when we were in the meeting I found out that target was in debt last year over 1billion and this year they are still in 600 million in debt this year. I also found interesting was actually doing something hands-on that I enjoyed but cleaning for 3 days was boring.
3.    A description of Target (Work placement) when you first walk into target on the right when you walk in the registers are there and on the left is the toys and clothes and lollies and then when you walk straight that’s the baby clothes and kids clothing and then when you go straight its layby and then left is bikes and toys and on the right is linen, bathroom, hardware and dressing rooms.

Isn't that interesting that you got to find out 'inside' information about Target in the staff meeting. I think retail is a pretty difficult industry these days - maybe because people love to buy online or use the internet to shop around to find the cheapest stuff.

1 The most interesting thing I learned while working at the Reject Shop was their terminology, for example, Deep See Recovery  was the act of searching behind products on the shelf to retrieve missing products, rubbish, or products fallen behind the shelving units.
2 Small, but full, it was a small shop but it was manageable, I was able to cope in this environment.
3 Recovery which was pulling stock forwards, folding boxes and throwing them in the bin, stocking shelves, helping customers.

Lachlan it sounds like the Reject Shop was a nice place to do work experience - and seems that you had lots to do. Funny that they call it 'deep sea recovery' - but it makes sense!

Now that you've completed your work experience placement and nearly finished your studies in the Career Pilot class, this is a chance to reflect on one of the central ideas that we've talked about; employability.

Write a 100-150 word response to the questions below and make sure you comment on or ask questions about your classmates posts.

1. Which employability skills did you use the most while on your work experience placement? Give specific examples to illustrate.
2. In the industry you worked in (e.g. retail, childcare, etc.) what employability skills do you think are most valuable? Explain your answer.
3. Do you think all of the employability skills can be taught/learned? Explain your answer.

Don't forget to respond to other people's posts!

This is a chance to reflect on your work experience placement - the good and the bad - and communicate with each other about your experiences.

Write a response to the questions below of around 100-150 words (in total) and please comment on or ask questions about your classmates' posts.

Questions:

1. What is the most interesting thing you've learned (either about the business, the industry, yourself etc.)?
2. Describe the workplace (give lots of details).
3. Describe some of your duties while you were on placement.

I learned so many things like how to communicate with the customers politely, how to work as a team and rely on each other, don’t force yourself to do something on your own, and I learned how to make prawn crackers. My duties at my placement is most likely serving customers  sometimes I help out in the kitchen like chopping veggies, meat etc. Sometimes I do the dishes if the dishwasher is not present. If I have to describe my work placement in that restaurant it's basically just like a one big family it's because we communicate a lot and help each other out so you feel  so  comfortable working.

It sounds like a really good place to work - good communication is key in a workplace I think - it can make even a busy, difficult shift pretty manageable because everybody is working together.

When I was doing my work placement at ginseng restaurant I was struggling at first because it was my first time working in a restaurant. The employability and technical skills that you need is different from where I used to work as a tradie or working in a factory. In restaurant the most needed skill is communication and teamwork, everything you do in restaurant involve communication skill and teamwork not like working in a factory where communication and teamwork is not much needed. I'm confident to my learning skill since I'm a quick learner and can adopt to things or environment easily. Everyone can learn all employability skills but some are just quicker learner than the others.

Hey Johnsun, I think that's a really good point - different industries often need different skills - although some do crossover. I think it's actually really good you've now had experience in the hospitality sector - I think it's an industry that teaches you a lot of useful transferable skills. I notice that you feel like you're more focused on how you communicate with people - which is awesome. CG

Yes I think your enthusiasm would have been great at FNCC. Having the ability to talk to all types of people and make them feel welcome and happy to be there is a huge advantage when working in community services or in community development. And teamwork is critical in a workplace like FNCC because so much is going on all the time and no doubt every day brings unexpected situations for the staff and volunteers - so working as a team I think is definitely very important.

Jess it sounds like FNCC was a great place to do work experience and gave you the chance to do a variety of activities with many different people. Community Centres are really fantastic community resources and like you saw offer so many things to so many people.

Thanks Ayoub. Yes it sounds like communication and teamwork are very important in a nursery setting. Also I think learning is a big part of any new job - good on you for trying something pretty new. Like I said to Esther knowing your own strengths and weaknesses in regards to employability can help you focus on the areas you need to improve. It's very helpful that teamwork and communication come naturally to to you because they're very important in nearly every workplace!

Yes Esther, I can imagine good communication is critical in an aged care facility! And any break downs in communication can have some serious effects. You have to communicate not just with other staff but the residents as well, which requires flexibility and adaptability. It's good that you observed the communication problem while on work experience - a clear reminder of why it's so important! And I think I agree with your last point - some of these skills seem inherent (we're born with them or we're not) - but some can definitely be learned and/or improved upon. Being conscious of your own strengths and weaknesses is crucial.

Thanks for sharing Ayoub.  :) Your work experience placement really does sound like hard work but it seems like you've been enjoying it and it's probably giving you a good idea about the horticulture industry and helping you to decide if that's what you really want to do in the future. Good on you!

Thanks for your response Esther. I think that'a good point - we might think an Aged Care facility only involves the care of the elderly, but like you saw, there are multiple jobs you can have. I think that's probably true of a lot of workplaces as well. Behind the obvious jobs there are a lot of support and 'hidden' jobs we might not think about.
